Getting to know you: Matthew Lindsay

What do you currently do?
I’m an associate director responsible for new business acquisition for Keycare which is the UK’s largest provider of insurance for lost and stolen keys. I develop and sustain strong relationships with our clients who span small and medium sized enterprises and blue chip organisations across sectors including banking, motor insurance and retail.

What is your inspiration in the business?
Keycare itself! I’m Keycare’s biggest fan and am constantly inspired by the service we provide. Recognising and being excited by Keycare’s potential to be a market leader, I approached the company in August 2010 and have thoroughly enjoyed progressing with the business as it goes from strength to strength.

Who do you admire?
My parents – I admire and respect the fantastic job they did in bringing up four boys – I’m the youngest of the four. I appreciate them even more having recently become a father to my beautiful daughter Lexi. If can do even half the job mum and dad did I’d be delighted.

Looking back are there things you would have done differently?
Not really – hindsight is a great thing but life’s lessons are the ones you teach yourself. All my experiences and learning have made me what I am today and, although I’ve taken some wrong turns along the way, everything has turned out well. I’m very happy and have some valuable lessons under my belt.

What defines your way of doing business?
Hard work, a ‘can do’ attitude, putting something back into our communities – and sustaining powerful partnerships. A safety registration scheme we launched with Suffolk Constabulary 12 months ago is a UK first and reflects our own CSR ethos in funding the force’s Safer Suffolk Foundation which supports vital grassroots community projects. As a business Keycare continues to back wide-ranging worthy charities.

What advice would you give to someone just starting out?
Never give up and remember that there will invariably be a ‘yes’ to compensate for a series of knockbacks which will keep you going. It also vital that you passionately believe in the product or service you are selling and don’t take things personally.
