Don’t look back in anger at rear-view recession – focus on the future

“Business owners should not be distracted by the UK falling back into recession. Despite the Office of National Statistics revealing the UK shrank by 0.2% in the first three months of 2012, businesses should continue to fight to grow their operations.

A survey of 4,000 businesses revealed this week that the first quarter had been the best since the start of the downturn in 2007 and at Pimlico Plumbers we can back that up with extra sales of £250,000, compared to the same period last year. This rear view mirror economics should not sculpt how businesses run their operations.

In reality we’ve never been out of recessionary conditions so nothing’s really changed.

Despite a ‘double-dip’ being confirmed, the world is no different this morning than it was yesterday. Business like mine still have the same amount of customers, the same amount of staff and the same amount of determination to keep going.

Multiply this by all the other SMEs out there in similar positions and we could see a brighter picture. We should not get depressed; we’ll just have to do more and work harder.

Not many people thought Chelsea FC would overcome the odds to beat Barcelona to reach the Champions League final last night. The business community has to evoke the Stamford Bridge spirit to make sure that we not only survive, but grow our operations.”
